Iran Hijab Row: Iran under pressure from protesters, more vigorously in Kurdish areas, one killed in firing


Amnesty International and the White House have condemned the action targeting the protesters. At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the British ambassador for sanctions on the moral police, expressing displeasure over the sanctions, calling it baseless.

The protests against the hijab in Iran are not stopping. Under pressure, the Iranian government on Tuesday intensified its crackdown on protesters in Kurdish areas in the west. During this, at least one died in Sanandaj, the capital of Kurdistan province, in riot police firing. Amnesty International and the White House have condemned the action targeting the protesters. At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the British ambassador for sanctions on the moral police, expressing displeasure over the sanctions, calling it baseless. 

185 people including 19 children have lost their lives

From Iran’s capital Tehran to other cities, videos are being circulated on the Internet media showing the brutality of security forces. A video aired on Monday showed university and high school students along with some women marching without headscarves and raising anti-government slogans. An online video posted by a Kurdish group shows firing and fire on a dark road in Sanandaj, 400 km from Tehran. 

Meanwhile, workers from two refineries from Monday also came out in support of the protesters. The employees claim that they have demonstrated in Abadan on Tuesday and will also demonstrate on Wednesday. 

On this, Iran’s state news agency Irna has claimed that this demonstration was about salary. According to the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights assessment, 185 people, including 19 children, have been killed during the protests.
