Australia's captain Aaron Finch announces retirement from ODIs


Aaron Finch announces retirement The third match of the three-match ODI series with New Zealand will be the last match of Finch’s ODI career. Cricket Australia has officially given information about Finch’s retirement.

The Australian cricket team has suffered a major setback ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup to be held next year. The current captain of the team, Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from ODIs. The third match of the three-match ODI series being played with New Zealand will be the last match of his ODI career. Cricket Australia has officially given information about Finch’s retirement.

The 45-year-old Finch has been struggling with poor form for some time now. The last major innings of the Australian captain’s bat was seen against Sri Lanka in June. He played an innings of 62 runs in this ODI match. He also failed to score runs in the first two matches of the one-day series being played against New Zealand. In these two matches, he has been able to score only 5 runs. 

In a statement issued on Saturday, Cricket Australia has informed that Finch will captain the team in the ICC T20 World Cup to be held at home this year. It has been ensured by the board that Finch will remain the captain and the team will participate in the T20 World Cup to be held from 16 October to 13 November under his leadership. 

Aaron Finch’s ODI career

Finch played a total of 145 ODIs for Australia in which he scored 5401 runs. During this he played 17 century innings. In the year 2020, he was named Player of the Year for Australia’s men’s team. Finch, who was part of the ODI team that won the World Cup in 2015, made his ODI debut in 2013 against Sri Lanka. He will play his last ODI match against New Zealand on Sunday 11 September.
